Torremolinos

A prominent municipality in the province of Malaga, a national reference in the tourism sector for decades and located just 12 kilometers from Malaga. The origin of its name is attributed to a watchtower and the windmills built to grind wheat, positioned perpendicular to the sea to harness the power of its springs.

Torremolinos bears witness to a rich and popular history with places like the fishing neighborhood of La Carihuela and abundant remnants of its past, including the Tower of Homage. Throughout the year, the municipality enthusiastically celebrates its fairs, typical festivals, and pilgrimages. The local cuisine, where fried fish ("pescaíto") takes center stage, is also noteworthy.

Torremolinos has a long and eventful history, as evidenced by numerous Phoenician, Greek, Roman, and Arab remnants found in the area. The earliest written records of Torremolinos date back to 1489 when the Catholic Monarchs decided to promote the repopulation of the place, then known as Torres de Pimentel. Years later, in 1502, the town became part of Malaga capital. This coastal enclave built some castles and watchtowers for its defense. The Castle of Santa Clara, from the 18th century, was one of the most important in the town.

The major transformation of Torremolinos began in the mid-20th century when this fishing town discovered the immense tourist potential offered by its extensive coastline and its mild climate. Since then, Torremolinos has become one of the main tourist attractions on the Costa del Sol, thanks to a significant offering of tourist services and the quality of its infrastructure.

Bajondillo, La Carihuela, Los Álamos, and Playamar are some of the magnificent beaches that adorn this coastline, where you can find important resort hotels, housing developments, and even a Congress Palace that hosts important international meetings. Torremolinos offers countless possibilities: from taking a swim and enjoying the sun almost year-round to practicing various sports, including golf, and dining in numerous restaurants where you can savor the typical "pescaíto" frito (fried fish).

Monuments: Despite the significant urban development in recent decades, Torremolinos has managed to preserve the maritime atmosphere in the streets of its more traditional neighborhoods, such as El Calvario, El Bajondillo, and La Carihuela.
