Mijas
When we think of a benchmark town for national and international tourism on the Costa del Sol, inevitably one name comes to mind: Mijas. Located at the foot of the mountain range of the same name, it showcases a typically Andalusian, 'white village' town. Mijas is a town that will bring us a myriad of pleasant experiences to our senses, both in terms of sight and taste, as it offers excellent local gastronomy. One of the main features of this tourist enclave is the combination of tradition with openness, the contrasts between Mijas Pueblo with its pedestrian streets, excellent views, and donkey-taxi rides, and the coastal Mijas with its beaches, beach bars, and golf courses.
The historic center, with its Arab layout and immersed in the mountainous landscape, houses some interesting buildings in its whitewashed streets, including some churches and chapels. Meanwhile, its surroundings preserve some archaeological sites, witnesses of the rich prehistoric past of the town.
The excellent climate enjoyed throughout the year, as well as the quality of its waters, make Mijas an ideal destination for those looking for a place to enjoy the coast without missing out on all the attractions hidden in the Malaga mountain range. Las Lagunas shows the most innovative side of Mijas. Golf courses and other sports and cultural facilities are just a part of the multiple services offered by this municipality. As you approach the coast, the rugged inland landscape gradually softens until it reaches the sea at the enclave known as La Cala. A traditional fishing village, it is now the center of 12 kilometers of beaches.
Mijas Pueblo rises like a grand balcony with views of the Mediterranean, with a layout that unmistakably recalls its Arab past. Walking its lively streets of whitewashed houses will reveal a typical Andalusian town full of history and charming corners. The square bullring, with its square exterior, the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Peña (17th century), and the Church of La Concepción (16th century) are some prominent monuments. It's also worth visiting the Auditorium and strolling peacefully along La Muralla, gardens, and balconies that offer privileged views of the Costa del Sol. And from time to time, you'll be surprised to see the friendly donkey-taxis, inviting you to explore the town center and its surroundings. Hiking enthusiasts can enjoy the numerous rural trails that run through the interior, among pine forests and summits. The paths leading to the Calvario hermitage (19th century) or the old marble quarry are some of the enticing options that await visitors.
