Fuengirola

It is a popular tourist municipality located on the western strip of the Costa del Sol, about 34 km from Malaga and situated between the towns of Benalmádena and Mijas Costa. With a long tourist tradition, this Malaga locality offers a wide range of services and infrastructure, including golf courses, equestrian centers, amusement parks, resort hotels, and restaurants, not to mention a significant cultural events calendar.

Fuengirola gets its name from a similar one given to it after the conquest by the Catholic Monarchs, 'Font-Jirola.' During the Arab period, Fuengirola was known as 'Sohail' (a name still retained by the castle), which was a phonetic adaptation of 'Suel,' the previous Roman name, itself derived from the Phoenician name Syalis.

The old town of Fuengirola is centered around Constitution Square, very close to the old fishermen's district known today as Los Boliches.

Fuengirola stretches along a narrow 8-kilometer coastal strip that boasts some of the best beaches on the Costa del Sol: Los Boliches, Fuengirola, La Campana, Torreblanca, Las Gaviotas... These well-maintained beaches are bordered by a long and bustling promenade that is home to residential complexes, hotels, restaurants, and other amenities, making it a comfortable place to enjoy the sun and the sea.

Sports enthusiasts have a wide range of options in Fuengirola. Those inclined toward golf will find around twenty magnificent 18-hole golf courses in the municipality and its surroundings, allowing them to practice this specialty year-round.

The neighboring town of Mijas features a racecourse and several riding schools that offer excellent facilities for those looking to take up or improve their equestrian skills. Tennis and paddle tennis can be enjoyed at various clubs in the area. The marina, located next to the fishing port, offers modern facilities for sailing and other water sports, such as sailing and scuba diving. Finally, outdoor sports enthusiasts will find the perfect setting in the inland areas of the province, where numerous trails are suitable for hiking, horseback riding, or cycling.
